8 Tips to Surviving Valentine’s Day if you’re SINGLE

I have experienced Valentine’s Day alone

I have experienced Valentine’s Day in a relationship, and still alone

I have done the first date Valentine’s Day (which was actually really fun)

I have had high expectations and been wholly disappointed on Valentine’s Day

…and I have been swept off my feet on Valentine’s Day

From experience… I know how to make myself happy on this day of love.

Let’s face it, Valentine’s Day is essentially a Hallmark holiday created for A) love sick couples who need yet another excuse to publicly profess their undying love and devotion B) saps  C) needy and greedy women who live for chocolates encased in heart-shaped boxes and, lest we forget, the infamous robin’s egg-blue box in which a diamond encrusted necklace nestles D) okay, me- yes, ever since my mom made me write valentines to all 35 classmates in grade school I have been devoted to the day of love- single or happily (or even unhappily) coupled.

But, if you happen to be single, Valentine’s Day can be sore subject. It’s a day when many a single lady sit at home alone or with others of the same status and stand up against the couple’s holiday by doing what many of us do best when feeling glum- gorge. I have done it. Yes, I devoured the most delicious red velvet cake, along with two of my favorite single girlfriends and one single guy. We had a blast. Until the next morning when I woke up to find the remnants of the night before and immediately dove into a two-week detox: steamed veggies, clean proteins, unprocessed carbs, and upp’d my daily exercise.

Instead of succumbing to Hallmark’s favorite holiday, forcing red hearts down our throats, this year celebrate your singlehood in a healthy way by giving thanks to your girlfriends, and loving yourself!

Learning to celebrate the day as a single can take some practice (and possibly years of counseling- no wonder my therapist drives a Benz!) Here are 4 tips to survive and honestly enjoy this day of love!

1. Do a Quickie Workout in Bed to Feel Sexy… while eating chocolate chip cookies ;) My fave lazy Quickie Workout in Bed that I can do while watching tv, reading emails in my iphone, or even eating chocolate… is my thighs quickie. I love it because I feel like I am doing almost nothing, But I really feel it!

2. Love Yourself. You’ve got to face this simple fact once and for all- in order to be in a healthy and harmonious relationship in which you trade genuine lasting love, you have to first love yourself. I am talking everything about yourself!

3. Take a bubble bath. Walk around the house naked. Draw the blinds of course and don’t do this when anyone else is home. This is not about performance, it’s about you, it’s about feeling beautiful in your skin.

4. Treat Yourself. Treat yourself to one of your favorite things- be it your favorite chocolate truffle (just one!), a massage, or even a diamond ring. If splurging on yourself is tough, rationalize it this way- if you were coupled, you would be wasting that cash on someone else. Why not spend it on yourself?!

5. Feel Good. Feel good from the inside out, by moving your body and getting healthy! Take the day off and luxuriate in some quality me-time. Take a hike, play catch with your dog at the park, or play Your Shape. Exercise has been proven to boost the mood as well as improve self-esteem. Women who workout feel better about themselves just in the knowing that they are doing something for themselves. Get a good sweat going. Go, on, move that butt!

6. Do Something for Someone Else. Case in point: I woke up one morning in a foul mood. A boyfriend had broken up with me the night before and all I wanted to do was marinate in my misery. After a few hours I decided to pry my butt off the bed and go for a walk. Along the way I crossed the path of about 200 exhausted marathoners on their last mile. Sweat streamed from their pores and their faces articulated more agony than even I could imagine. Since I had no water, Luna bars or a finish line to take the pain away, I looked one particularly pathetic runner in the eye and smiled. Her expression instantly softened and she responded with the most genuinely thankful smile. Somehow my smile lightened her day, and her smile brightened mine. Moral of my rambling anecdote: doing something for someone else can actually be construed as selfishly satisfying.

7. Make Yourself a Meal. Celebrate yourself! Better yet, invite girlfriends over and celebrate yourselves with a fab Bites with Benefits Meal filled with Foods for Beauty! or filled with Foods to make you Happy!

8. Create an “I Love Me” journal and write out all of the things that are fabulous about you. No one else is going to see this. Consider it your opportunity to be ruthlessly honest and even a bit arrogant.

Going through a breakup?

Try these Bites with Benefits to help you Mend a Broken Heart faster. I know… it’s tough. Believe me… been there.

So happy Valentine’s Day to all of you singles out there! This time dedicated solely to yourself could be the best of your life- when you don’t depend on another half to be whole, you are fabulous enough to be whole on your own.
