The Smart & Skinny Way to Party

No matter how healthy you are in your everyday life, most rules go out the window at a party. And, to certain degree, they should! You don’t want to be sitting stiffly in the corner chewing on celery and sipping water while everyone else is having a great time. But, you can still bring healthy, figure-saving, beauty-enhancing habits to a cocktail party. Here are some ways you can enjoy the party without feeling like you totally betrayed your usual jogging, gym-going, healthy-eating self.

NIGHT BEFORE

Avoid A Day-Before Hangover
Holiday season calls for LOTS of parties! If you drink too much the night before the big night, down two glasses of water before bed. Your skin will thank you for it (too much alcohol can make your skin dehydrated, dull, and puffy), not to mention you will save yourself from being totally not in the mood. Plus you’ll have a better chance of actually feeling like hitting the gym in the morning so you can do some pre-party de-puffing the day of the big night!

BEFORE YOU GO

Eat Breakfast
Don’t skip on meals the day of a party because you want to squeeze into a tight dress. Have a large breakfast and medium sized lunch. Your stomach will have time to de-puff from those meals. But if you skip them, you’ll probably crash and eat way too much at the party.

Last Minute Workout
If you’re going to a lot of parties lately, you may not have had time to work out as often. But you actually do have time. All those hours spend in front of the mirror, doing your hair, brushing your teeth, applying shimmer. Do some squats while doing your makeup, or crunches while you wait for your hair straightener to heat up.

Coconut Water For Energy
Before a long night, instead of dehydrating coffee that will have you running to the bathroom all night, drink some coconut water. The natural electrolytes will keep you energized without a crash.

Snack Before You Go
Eating something sweet and salty, like peanut butter on crackers, will actually cancel out multiple different cravings later on. Studies have also found that having a small snack before a meal can cause you to eat less at the meal, because you overestimate the calories in your snack.

WHAT TO WEAR

Cover That Tummy
Even if you don’t over do it on the food platters, even a small meal can give your tummy a little bloat. Wear a dress with an empire waist. The dress will cinch you just below your breasts, making them look larger and detracting from your stomach. An empire waist dress is also loose on the stomach, so you don’t need to feel that little tug just because you grabbed one too many stuffed mushrooms. Another idea- a dress with a belted waist. It both reminds you not to eat too much (since you feel the cinch) and draws attention to the skinniest part of your stomach. You can also try a cute printed top tucked into a skirt. It’s comfortable, statement making, yet not stomach attention grabbing.

WHAT TO EAT

Vodka vs. Wine
Instead of downing three glasses of wine with dinner, slowly slip on a cocktail. Hard alcohol generally has much fewer calories than wine. Another tip: choose a drink “on the rocks” (with ice) instead of “up” (martini style- without ice). Don’t order another drink until you finish all of the ice- a great way to pace yourself and get a little hydrating water while you’re at it.

Pick and Choose Your Bites
I know you want to try everything that the catering company or hostess has whipped up. But usually, just having one small bite of every type of fare offered can add up to way too many calories. Try to only pick up an appetizer off of every 3rd platter.

POST-PARTY MUSTS

Take Off Your Makeup Before Bed
Leaving your makeup on not only causes acne, but it will leave your face looking swollen. Leaving on your mascara can also make you lose a lot of eyelashes. No more flirtatious blinking without those. Besides, seeing smeared makeup on your face in the morning isn’t the greatest way to start off your day as it is.

And of course… have fun! xx
