Just Calm Down... and stop stressing!

In this time of fast-paced overachieving and mindless multi-tasking, we tend to try to be everything to everyone, leaving us harried and spread too thin to truly be good to anyone at all, let alone ourselves. Far away countries and pamper-promising spas offer momentary escapes from the frenetic fast lane of life that we have, for some odd reason, voluntarily merged onto. Excusing yourself entirely and escaping to a land far far away from life’s frenzied flow is permissible on occasion, but allowing daily interludes, even for just 5-minutes, can help alleviate unnecessary stress.

Many books on “simplifying your life” are undoubtedly invaluable, but they can be ponderous and preachy. Sometimes, what we need is some realistic advice and simple recipes that can implemented and seamlessly fused into our daily lives right now.

So what is the secret to stress reduction? That is a questions that tens of millions of Americans are vying to know the answer to. Thankfully, the answer is relatively easy- me-time.

For some of us, calm comes in the form of a yoga class, others prefer to take it in smaller doses from, say, a bottle. No, I’m not inferring “THE bottle,” I mean a bottle of Chinese herbs, a spray of the infallible “rescue remedy,” or, for the pharmaceutically-inclined, a chemically-calming “happy pill.”

Personally, in order for calm to come over me, it has to be situation-based, tending to my specific frenzy-incited state. Finding calm is personal and can be different for every single person. A few of my faves?

-Get In Deep

A massage can (depending on the pressure- the harder the better, that whole gentle method just makes me all the more anxious) diffuse a state of dis-ease.

-Get Dirty

Get back to your roots and find a fix for your need to be nurtured by tending to a garden, which can also help your quest to eat right! No backyard? Plant your perennials along a windowsill.

-The Need to be Kneaded

While a fifty-minute foot rub may pleasantly sedate your senses, you can soothe sore feet and relieve a restless mind at-home, on a plane or at a desk reflexology can combat anything from anxiety to melancholy.

-Pet a Pup

Sometimes snuggling with my sweet black lab takes my angst away.

-Bead It

String together a strand of multicolored healing gems for a double-duty de-stressing and bedazzling activity. Making necklaces out of healing stones like amethyst (said to induce serenity and peace of mind) or moonstone (to promote fertility and positive feminine health) is a simultaneously calming and beautifying at-home

-Just Calm Down

When in a bind and only a few seconds of relief are available, a direct approach works best for me. This photo of “calm” written in a blue skin-soothing mud mask across my forehead is an instant reminder to CALM DOWN! It’s kind of like the weight-loss approach of sticking “fat” photos on the refrigerator to dissuade accidental gorging. Yes, it looks weird. Maybe don’t try this method when out in public. But just looking at yourself in the mirror could very well make you laugh- an instant stress reliever! Whatever works, you know!
